Goodness me there are a lot of people dancing along to the drumming beat of the ancients calling. Having felt as though I was the only person hearing that distant beat, I am now surrounded by gathering tribes everywhere I turn and everywhere I go. I seem to meet more of these kindred souls virtually every day. Each time I do, I feel enlivened and a deep sense of companionship with people whom I have never previously met. I no longer feel as though this walk is a lonely one; it is in fact filled with beautiful, passionate people each heading towards an idealistic utopian place, one that nourishes, rather than depletes, the benevolent earth and is teeming with wildlife thriving within a balanced ecosystem. We all dream of this place and countless numbers of us seem to be working towards making this dream a reality.
I am so grateful to have discovered these kindred spirits on a similar path to mine and to find such kinship on this journey, which feels more achievable now I am walking with so many. What feels important to share beyond these groups though, is that great things are really happening: there is a ground swell, a tidal wave of change heading this way and there are many reasons to feel hope and positivity about the future. But how best to spread this word and allow more people to be part of something larger than themselves? Especially as so many people report feeling lost, helpless and fearful of the future. How do I spread the word that these movements are happening and worth getting excited about?
I feel compelled to connect to young people. Teenagers are frequently misunderstood by western society and they are not given the support and understanding they need at what is a crucial time in brain development. The teenage brain is wired for change and it is change that we need right now so I personally think young people are a vital part of the solution. Perhaps it would help if we all connected to our own inner teenager, who will still be lurking somewhere within us, maybe somewhere within the dusty shadows where we haven’t looked for decades. The joyful energy of rebellion, tribalism and positivity could be harnessed to create a youthful shift towards a necessary change in perspective. One that benefits the majority and includes all of creation. Humans are not the most important, but as a society, we need greater humility to recognise that. The change we need will have to be a ground-up movement. Humility won’t ever come from the top down with our politicians; there are too many dragons in that den to allow humility to flourish. So let us gather on the ground, welcome in young people or find the young person who still resides within us. When there are enough of us gathered, the change will happen. It is already gathering momentum and we are heading towards a better place. Utopia is just further along the way, so everyone, just keep walking.
The third and last, potent super moon of the year was also this week, gloriously visible as the sky actually stayed clear and it thankfully stopped raining for a while. What a heavy frost we had instead; a crunchy pale blanket lay across the lawn and pretty icicles clung elegantly to the long grasses around the borders. Stunning, glistening iced cobwebs decorated the fenceposts while their expert weavers hid from the hungry beaks of ducks out looking for extra breakfast. My fingers were numb as I trudged through the morning routine of feeding and watering all the animals, but whilst freezing, I marvelled at how glorious the morning was compared to the wet, grey, rainy ones which are becoming too familiar. All too soon the sun rose high enough to melt the beauty and the ground softened back to soggy mud. Alas, it was joyful while it lasted.
The super moon shone down to illuminate all the good work being done by so many. There is much more to do, but it is happening and I am proud to be doing my small part; a tiny drop within the tidal wave of change that collectively we are creating. Join us, spread the word and invite any teenagers you can find, no matter how old they are now.
